Course Description

This course addresses the development of artistry in relation to the process of music learning. Engage in songs and activities that inspire artistry and enhance music learning.  Improve rhythmic precision, in-tune singing, choral sound, and musicality in your own classroom or chorus. Tailor lessons to your own children, as your classroom or chorus serves as the music teaching/learning laboratory for this online course. Unison art songs can be used with inexperienced singers, ages 7-13, or with more developed singers as warm-ups. Ongoing pedagogical support is provided throughout the course.

This course, with or without CEUs/CPDUs, will require one hour of your time each week for ten weeks. Twenty minutes of that hour will be engaged with your children in music activities and the lovely songs of the Come Children Sing Institute SONG LIBRARY, complete with notation, MP3 files, and suggestions. The twenty minutes with children can be broken into two ten-minute segments during the week. Another twenty minutes each week will consist of reviewing/preparing the music activities for your children. The final twenty minutes each week will be with accompanying online materials, which might include short postings about music teaching and learning, short audios or videos that you can play directly on your computer, and interactive online activities.

Each week for 10 weeks, one new lesson will be posted. You can use the lessons with any grouping of children ages 7-13, but you must use all 10 lessons with the same group of children, so you can monitor musical growth and development throughout the length of the course. 14 weeks will be allotted for you to complete the 10 lessons, allowing for holidays, travel, or illness. Your online course begins when you register. Continuing coursework is available for those who wish to earn additional professional development hours.

Satisfactory completion of the 10 hours of professional development will be determined by interactive online activities and website tracking of your involvement in each of the 10 lessons. Your satisfactory completion will earn a certificate from the Come Children Sing Institute verifying 10 hours of online professional development.* If you want to also receive 1 CEU, you will then be able to click a link to the simple online form at Indiana University/Purdue University, Indianapolis (IUPUI), pay the additional $30 to IUPUI at that time, and receive a university certificate awarding 1 CEU—Continuing Education Unit.

*CPDUs—The Illinois State Board of Education will award 10 CPDUs for the satisfactory completion of this course. A certificate from the Come Children Sing Institute verifies 10 hours of online professional development. University CEU is not necessary.
