Scaffolding Learning

You scaffold your child’s development every day. You help your little one to express his meaning in words. You support your child physically so that he can do what he will soon be able to do alone. You help your little with tasks like getting dressed, often making him feel that he did it all by himself. You sense the level of support your child needs in each situation and increase or decrease assistance accordingly. Your scaffolding leads your little one to success and independence in all dimensions. The same kind of loving support applied to your little one’s music development will help to propel your child through the process of Music Babble toward tuneful and rhythmic singing. Respond in song or chant to your child’s musical meaning. Model what you think he is trying to “say” rhythmically or tonally. Expand his rhythm or tonal response with a lengthened one. Sense his readiness for more advanced music dialogue or more independent musical response and adjust the level of your support accordingly. Help your child to do musically what he cannot yet do by himself and you will find some day that he will no longer need the training wheels.
