Music Becomes the Play

Gem Songs and Art Songs are musically quite sophisticated. Your child may be more intrigued with Gem Songs and Art Songs than with Rhythm and Tonal Activities. Gem Songs and Art Songs employ the very skills your little one is developing through Rhythm and Tonal Activities, becoming the play of “Playing Music.”

The words to Gem Songs and Art Songs may charm your little one, but your little musician receives Gem Songs and Art Songs at a much higher level than just words. As your little one grows musically, it is the interaction between text, rhythm and melody that compels your child. “Props” that might activate “Playing Music” with Rhythm and Tonal Activities are not necessary, as your little one becomes engrossed in the musicality of the song, engaging in “Playing Music” like a professional musician. A trite little text set in an unusual tonality or meter can become quite a sophisticated little song, with far greater musical depth than the text would lead one to believe. The words may draw your little one’s sense of humor, but it is the interaction between text, rhythm and melody that draws your little one’s musicality.

Do not be concerned if your child is more intrigued with Gem Songs and Art Songs than with Rhythm and Tonal Activities. It is the music itself that becomes the play in the more sophisticated song literature. Your little musician will continue to develop the readiness for more complex Gem Songs and Art Songs through the sequenced Rhythm and Tonal Activities.
