Silence Is Golden

Grandchild #3, at 1 year, 11 months, had been a man of few words. The week before his second birthday, he wouldn't even answer Grammy's question, "How old are you going to be?" He accommodated her rephrased question, "Are you going to be 2 years old?" with a dry, "Yuh." A week or two later, Grammy opened his big brother's favorite book about the planets. The 2 year old enthusiastically volunteered, "Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune!"
Children's output, whether music or language, is not necessarily an indication of their level of understanding or development. The quality of what goes into a child at these young ages is far more indicative of the level of music or language learning than whatever comes out.
