“Bah bah bah” serves for Rhythm Dialogue, but for the not-yet verbal child, it can also communicate the desire to engage in music activity. Grandchild #1, at 13 months, used “Daddee” to label about everything, yet looked up at Grammy in the car and invited Rhythm Dialogue in Duple meter with, ”Bah bah bah?” At 15 months, his mother asked when he got up from his nap, “Should we do some Come Children, Sing?” His response—“Bah bah?” At 18 months, while playing with rhythm sticks, chanting “bah bah,” he began walking around the room with the sticks. Mommy discouraged his walking with them by distracting him with something else. He played with the distraction then looked for his rhythm sticks with the inquiry, “Bah bahs?” Grandbaby #2, at 18 months, used “Bah bah bah” to request to call Grammy on the phone.
