Your Own Musical Preferences

The music you choose to listen to on your own time surely reflects your own musical tastes. Whether rock, pop, jazz, country, or classical, your own musical preferences should not affect the music learning activities you provide for your children any more than your own food preferences affect the snacks you provide for your children’s good health. As an educator, your responsibility is to provide for your children’s growth and development. Whether food or music, whatever meets children’s growing needs may not line up with your own personal tastes. You adjust your own preferences every day to meet the individual needs of each child. You adjust your own preferences to meet the expectations of your own school or agency. You may need to adjust your own preferences to meet the musical needs of your children. And you may, in the process, find your own musicality developing new tastes.
