Master Teachers

Children are our finest teachers. The more we teach to the musical mind, the more the musical mind teaches us. Its magic leads us to ongoing exploration, manipulation, and celebration of audiation, exciting music teaching, and music learning. It validates or challenges our theories, hypotheses, and assumptions about music learning and teaching, coaching us to become more efficient, more playful, more musical teachers.

We have to become open enough, flexible enough, and musical enough to learn from the children—whose musical minds will guide us in developing lesson plans and activities, let us know when more or less of particular content is needed, and what is or isn't appropriate to probe next. Mentors, books, or websites about music learning can only guide us. We have to be bold enough and musical enough to fully engage with children’s musical minds; to go to the true source—audiation itself—to learn about the process of music learning. Only then can we become the master teachers that children are.
