Musical Energy

You have read about managing energy in the early childhood classroom, which sustains momentum throughout the class. You have read about the “energy of the line,” which propels the musicality of a song in all its nuance. How might these come together?

Energy is energy, whatever the form. Musical energy carries children. The more musical our classes, the more we are managing children's energy. The more we manage children's energy, the more musical our classes become.

Techniques serve the flow of energy—musical energy and children’s energy. The “seamless children’s play” offers a vehicle that carries energy from start to finish. Non-verbal communication assures that the energy of the musical narrative is prime, without the interruption of words.  Effective techniques for passing out and collecting props, or offering turns with a single prop keep energy moving—musical energy and children’s energy, in tandem. Techniques that effectively engage children in one-on-one response manipulate energy, keeping the energy of the musical narrative in the forefront, while simultaneously drawing the energy of the individual child and that of the group in sync with that musical energy. Lesson planning techniques serve to direct the flow of energy throughout the class—musical energy and children’s energy, trimming every disruption of that flow, so that musical energy and children’s energy are literally on the same wave length throughout the class.

A master teacher is an artist with energy—musical energy, children’s energy, and their powerful combination.
