Babbling Tonal Syllables

Grandchild #1, 4 years, 4 months, had been exposed to tonal syllables for several months with CCS Online Classes. Grammy wanted to assess his comfort level with tonal syllables, so she began singing in Dorian tonality with syllables, leaving space for response of resting tone or dialogue, just to see how he might respond. The child was very comfortable with the tonal syllables. He played with Grammy with the tonal syllables in Dorian for quite some time, occasionally delivering the resting tone, sometimes imitating Grammy’s tonal segments, and sometimes babbling syllables. Most indicative of his level of development was his comfort in babbling tonal syllables with the backdrop of his security in Dorian tonality. He just hadn’t yet come to the later development of the one-to-one correspondence between syllables and pitches.

All good intentions to record the session didn’t work, but the child did. Here is a very poor recording of the tail end of the session, even though most was lost. Here he is singing with Grammy, babbling syllables in Dorian tonality.
